AAA Joins the Global Metrology Community in Marking 150 Years of International Cooperation
This month, the global metrology community commemorates a historic milestone—150 years since the signing of the Metre Convention, a landmark agreement that laid the foundation for international cooperation in measurement science. This anniversary marks a century and a half of collaboration, innovation, and impact, underscoring how accurate and reliable measurements shape our world.
Under the 2025
theme, “Measurements for all times, for all people,” AAA
Accreditation extends
a warm invitation to laboratories, metrologists, scientists, students, and the
public to join in this year’s celebration. Events will range from the official
in-person commemoration at UNESCO on World Metrology Day to a series of dynamic
scientific and cultural gatherings around the globe.
Keynote addresses,
panel discussions, and special metrology sessions will bring together
professionals from diverse sectors to explore and share how measurement drives
progress in science, industry, healthcare, education, and beyond.
Signed on 20 May
1875, the Metre Convention established a lasting framework for international
cooperation in metrology. It led to the creation of the International Bureau of
Weights and Measures (BIPM), a pivotal institution that ensures global
measurement consistency—essential for research, innovation, equitable trade,
and sustainable development.
Today,
measurements underpin nearly every facet of modern life—from advancing
technology and facilitating fair commerce to improving public health and food
safety. The legacy of the Metre Convention lives on through the continued
pursuit of precision, equity, and global trust in measurements.
